New CatholicCare Early Learning Centre announced for Woy Woy

A week before Christmas CatholicCare received word that its application for State Government funding to build a third Early Learning & Care Centre on the central coast, to be co-located with St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School at Woy Woy, had been successful. The new centre will be the fifth ELC provided by CatholicCare Diocese of Broken Bay.

CatholicCare Chief Operating Officer Steve Mondy said: "We've been given almost $1.1 million out of a $5.7 million capital works fund designed to provide more preschool places in regional NSW. We will use the funding to construct a new three-room preschool with places for 60 children aged 3-5.

In announcing the funding State Member for Gosford Chris Holstein said, "The fund is part of the Government's initiative to secure a preschool education for all children in the twelve months prior to formal schooling, delivered by a qualified teacher in their year before Kindergarten.

"In addition to the demonstrated need [to ease the undersupply of preschool places], submissions were assessed on the value for money and quality of the proposed construction, and on the continuing financial viability of the planned addition to services.

Steve Mondy said: "The money being provided to co-locate an Early Learning Centre with the Catholic Primary School at Woy Woy would enhance educational outcomes for local children. We will commence building in 2014 with an opening date to coincide with the start of school in 2015. Parents can register an expression of interest at St John the Baptists School from next year."

The new ELC will be purpose built with room for a range of additional services to be provided for local families over time. CatholicCare anticipates that the Centre will become a community hub for a range of programs and activities including parenting groups, family support and other child related play based activities.
